The merger created some competition for jobs within West Columbia as well as between Greenville and Charleston; however it also helped increase tourism in both cities. West Columbia has been expanding rapidly since its incorporation into city status; in 2000 it had 8600 residents and by 2009 that number had increased to 11300 inhabitants making it one of South Carolina's fastest-growing towns over that time period. Since being annexed into Charleston proper in 2006, total employment within West Columbia has grown from 4000 positions to over 8000 positions making it one ofSouth Carolina's most highly-employment areas outside of major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta or Jacksonville Beach. One reason for this growth are many new businesses that have sprung up around downtown looking to capitalize on what they see as an opportunity in an industry facing increasing competition from other global entities such as Amazon Web Services and Apple Inc.. Additionally there are numerous private academies (eastern high school) which have opened their doors throughout downtown providing more opportunities for students than ever before while still remaining close enough so that locals can get involved directly without having to travel too far away. With all these reasons going into play why hasn't Downtown seen any significant gentrification yet? There could be several reasons but given how much work remains undone for projects like Main Street Eastside revitalization or even redevelopingitas crane field including getting state funding - those who want to see changes will likely continue doing so until things start happening - rather than starting anything themselves which would lead inevitably to gentrification

West Columbia, South Carolina is a city in the state of South Carolina, United States. The population was 103,824 as of the 2010 census[1] and is the county seat of Richland County. The city is located on the Ashley River, about 18 miles (27 km) south-southwest of Charleston. The area that would become West Columbia was first settled by English colonists in 1638. In 1795, it became part of what later became Union County. In 1836, it became part of Spartanburg County and in 1861 it became part of Richland County. The Arsenal shipyard and other businesses moved to West Columbia from Spartanburg in 1907 when the plant was nationalized by President Woodrow Wilson as part of his New Deal.[2] During World War II, West Columbia was one of over 60 cities which were bombed by American forces during the war effort totaling more than 1 million tons (100 thousand metric tonnes). More than two-thirds (67%)of all destroyed buildings were found within 5 blocks (3 kilometres) or less of downtown; only 11% were located further away from downtown. total destruction totaled $26 million dollars with most destroyed near Buckman Aeronautical Laboratory complex which burned for hours after attack[3][4].
In 1802, the area that is now West Columbia was part of the British colony of South Carolina. The first white settlers in the area were Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1798. In 1800, a survey showed that land in what is now West Columbia was worth $1 per acre. The first store opened in 1801 and by 1810, there were 10 stores operating in the town. In 1818, a post office was established and by 1830, there were 15 post offices operating in the town. The town slowly grew as a commercial center with businesses such as grocery stores, flour mills and tanneries opening up until around 1880 when railroad construction began making it an increasingly important market for goods arriving from outside of South Carolina. By 1900, West Columbia had become an official city with its own police department and mayor. It continued to grow until World War II when it experienced significant decline due to lack of industry and population growth after the war. West Columbia again became an official city following the war but saw little development until recently when several new businesses have begun to open up including two hospitals and a number of restaurants which have helped revive downtown areas including Rice University Stadium which has seen increased usage over the years due to its location just downriver from the downtown district.
