The town was founded by James Bartlett in 1823 and named for him. The first post office in Bartlett was established on October 14, 1824, by order of Governor John Sevier. On July 1, 1829, the name of the town changed to Bartlett after General J.E.B. Stuart's brigade under Colonel David Denny fought and won a decisive victory at Palo Alto Hill near Bartlett on January 15, 1830. In 1836-37 there were two destructive fires that destroyed most of the city center; however firefighters responded and quickly restored most of what had been lost including many businesses and residences In 1865 a smallpox epidemic hit the area and killed tens of thousands of people across central Kentucky; however no cases were reported in Hardin County until 1865 because transportation links between Louisville and Nashville kept those areas healthy . In 1870 an act was passed giving voting rights to women over 21 years old who resided within one thousand feet (600 m) of an election site; this started women's suffrage movement in Tennessee The first post office building located in downtown Bartlett was built in 1903 with services starting on February 5th On November 3rd 1916 a tornado touched down just outside town limits causing some damage but no injuries or fatalities
