In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burnedColumbia Methodist Church after Maj. Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. After the war ended, many of the post-war white settlers moving into Knox County (modern day Vanderbilt) brought their families with them and began to clear land around Columbia for farming purposes; this increased demand for water resources led to the founding of a dam on the Cumberland River east of town in 1922 which still provides irrigation water today. subsequent developer campaigns resulted in large tracts of rural land being annexed by Columbia over time: including much of present day Logan County; most notably parts of Chattanooga and Murfreesboro counties; while also incorporating neighboring communities such as Bellevue and Greeneville into Columbia's municipality status from 1907 to 1957 when those municipalities seceded from Knox County to form their own county government—an event known as " annexationocolonialism." In recent years some efforts have been made to revitalize downtownColumbia through programming such as art walks/exhibitions or music events featuring local bands throughout summer months; however these initiatives have not gained significant momentum since 2007 when city officials finalized plans for a new development adjacent to Corinthian Hall which will include approximately 1 million square feet (90 m2) office space and more than 100 residential units commanded by one high-priced real estate mogul who has expressed interest in expanding his holdings into downtownColumbia should he be elected mayor next year; although no actual construction has yet commenced

Columbia, Tennessee was founded by the Chickasaw people in 1796. The area that now makes up Columbia was first inhabited by the Caddo and Cherokee. The town of Murfreesboro was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson and became a major center for cotton production. In 1847, Columbia was named the capital of Tennessee and served as the state's primary political and cultural center until they were moved to Nashville in 1963. Today, Columbia is a small town with a rich history that can be found all around its rural locale. The most significant event in Columbia's history occurred on July 4, 1861 when Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Union troops at Battle of Fort Sumter. This event led to the American Civil War and ultimately Led to the death of more than 620,000 Americans including over 200 residents of Columbia itself. 2 years later, on April 12th, 1863, Union soldiers under General Ulysses S. Grant fought a successful battle against Confederate forces at Bridgeport Church near what is now Murfreesboro. This victory marked the end of military hostilities between Union and Confederate forces and helped spur investment into nearby Memphis which would soon become an important manufacturing center during Reconstruction period after the war ended. Today, Columbia remains an agricultural community with a focus on farming produce such as fruits and vegetables; dairy products; hay; cattle; horses; poultry; meatpacking animals; grains (including corn); lumber; crops (including cotton) and many other types of businesses that contribute to its economy today. It has also regained some lost ground since the late 1990s when it experienced increased competition from Memphis for jobs in technology-based industries such as software engineering or information technology services because those jobs have become increasingly automated or outsourced across much of America while Davidson County continues to experience high levels of poverty due largely to low productivity within its educational system despite efforts by city leaders to improve conditions there over time
