Cookeville is a town in the state of Tennessee, United States. The population was 7,689 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cookeville has been inhabited for over 4,000 years and is named after General Andrew Jackson's aide and friend Jedediah Cooke. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cookeville were French traders in 1692. They named it "Ville-Marie" (City of Marie), but no evidence suggests that they ever actually lived there. In 1701, Captain John Smith traveled through Tennessee on his mapping expedition and noted that he had passed by "a most excellent village called Coneville [Cookeville]". He included a description of the place in his journal. In 1735, General James Robertson decided to establish a military post near where he believed future rivers would flow - he called it Fort Robertson or "Old Fort Robertson". The post was established just east of present day Cookeville on the Cumberland River. By 1800, there were 18 white residents living at Fort Robertson; however only two farmers resided there permanently: James Mclntyre and his son Ebenezer Mclntyre Sr.. during its history many events have taken place including battles fought at Battle Creek Bridge against Cherokee Indians in 1865 and 1871 as well as other skirmishes with neighbouring towns such as Clarksville and Murfreesboro
Founded in 1819, Cookeville was a small town in Tennessee before the American Civil War. It was known for its cotton plantations and for the Battle of Cookeville, which took place on November 12, 1861. The battle was fought between Confederate forces and Union troops and resulted in a Confederate victory.
