He later served as Governor of Virginia from 1933 to 1937 and as United States Ambassador to China from 1941 to 1945. In 1868, Crossville received its nickname "The Hub" because it played an important role in trade between Loudoun County and nearby Radford Junction due to its location on a Branch Line Railroad line that connected Radford with Blacksburg and Richmond. A post office called Crossville has been open since February 14, 1832; pioneer John Spears' post office address is still listed on USGS map #4302A which is located near modern day crossville
