Morgan & Co., which produced cartridges from 1856 until 1865. In 1868 P&O Railway opened a line through the community and began shipping ammunition westward, including bullets made by J.B. Morgan & Co.. With increased military activity throughout the 1860s and 1870s, bullets became an important part of artillery munitions used by both Confederate and Union troops. During the Civil War bullets were often manufactured in large quantities for use by artillerymen across Tennessee as well as Kentucky and Missouri. In 1892 Girdwood Ammunition Company was founded in Dyersburg with intent to manufacture high-class rounds for military use only (other than skeet). Girdwood Ammo quickly became known for their quality rifle ammunition, becoming one of TN's most successful gunsmithing firms during this time period (see below). The name "Dyersburg" is derived from the Cherokee word yidz-er-bihg (a place where cotton can be grown). The first settler in what would become Dyersburg was James Hahn in 1814. His son, John Hahn, organized a small community called Hazardville near present day Dyerburg on May 2, 1828. A post office was established at Hazardville on November 3, 1830 by John Hahn and his brother-in-law David Gentry. In 1835, James Hahn's grandson George Wills founded the town of Dyersburg; it replaced Hazardville as the Town of Dyersburg on December 30th of that year. The first store in what would become Dyersburg was built by Solomon Dickerson around 1840; it was burned down in 1862 but rebuilt and operated until 1865. Two years later, Jnoah Dent opened his first store within the limits of today's town limits - Dickerson & Dent Store - which became one of the early sources for supplies and services to residents in what would become known as "the Antilles". Dyersburg, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville-Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dyersburg was founded in 1847 by James Mays and his family. The town has been enlarged several times since its founding and now includes a total of 15 buildings on 3 acres (1 hectare). The first settler in what would become Dyersburg was James Mays who arrived in 1847 from Kentucky with his family. In 1850, he built the first house on what is now Main Street. By 1870, Mays had three stores and seven homes in Dyersburg. He also farmed land which enabled him to buy more land for his business ventures. By 1888, Mays had 10 businesses including five grocery stores and two lumberyards. In 1892, Dyerberg built the first jail in Williamson County and it served as a facility for local law enforcement until 1915 when it was replaced by the present courthouse complex that stands today on Main Street between Church and State Streets. In 1903, J C Daniels opened the first store west of Memphis in what would become known as downtown Dyersburg. Over time other retailers followed suit such as Sears & Roebuck (1910), Hometown Stores (1915), Dillons department store (1929) and A&P Supermarkets Inc.(1963). These businesses generated an annual economic output of $2 million which supported many jobs throughout the community during their respective decades of operation! With all these successful businesses however., there were also some negative aspects to this growth including crime rates reaching alarming levels which led to resource depletion within Downtown Dyerburg over time leading to social unrest among residents culminating with Ferguson's Rebellion against city hall rule in 1968! This event marked a turning point for Downtown Dyerburgh as most of original business owners left leaving behind a decrepit environment which still exists today! Forrest Tucker purchased all remaining assets of these formerurers post- Rebellion giving birth to Forrest Tucker Plaza today home to various shops/retail outlets along with one large restaurant/bar called “Tucker’s”!
