It is located in the extreme northeastern corner of Union County and borders Hardin County to the south. Goodlettsville is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. The original settlement in what is now Goodlettsville was called "Fenton" after Colonel John Fenton, captain of artillery for General Andrew Johnson during the American Civil War. The first gun in Goodlettsville was made by Nicholas Brownell and patented on March 3, 1832. It consisted of a tube with a breechlock at one end and an ammunition feeder or “ammunition cart” at the other, which could be drawn by horses or dogs. There were also several pistols made here during this time period but they are all long gone except for one that still stands today inoperable at nearby Rhea Park Museum near Antioch, Tennessee In 1875 William Hargrave built his shop on Main Street and began manufacturing pistols for use by farmers and hunters under the name "Hargrave & Co." The first settler in what became Goodlettsville was James Goodlett who arrived with his family from Franklin County, Kentucky in 1811. James' brother-in-law Christopher Swann also settled in what would become Goodlettsville and built a cabin there on July 12th, 1821. George Washington Goodlett came to live in what would become Goodlettsville full time around 1830 and started developing it into an agricultural society which he called "The Garden". In 1831 he donated enough land to build a gristmill that would powered several new families homes until 1862 when it went bankrupt due to overuse by farmers during the peak cotton production season of 1860-1861 In 1865 Union General Braxton Bragg decided upon Chattanoogan Gap as his strategic defensive line against Confederate forces advancing through East Tennessee during their campaign known as the Overland Campaign On November 12th 1865 General Bragg ordered all troops within good range of Chattanooga be destroyed including those within good range of Greensboro so as notto cause any civilian casualties Badly damaged but still standing after being hit by artillery fire while streaming coffee out of its console window one day while working at home Stephen Henson purchased it from General Bragg for $8 per acre less than neighboring plantations such as Donelson Barracks which were razed that same year along with over 130 other plantations following Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House . After serving as both county seat (1881) and municipal government for much of its history until incorporation into Chattanooga proper in 1902, it reverted back to its original name before becoming an unincorporated area once again outside city limits .
