Jackson, Tennessee is a small town in the United States located in the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis- Shelby-Ft. Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jackson is named after James K. Polk, 44th president of the United States and one of its founders. The town was founded by farmers on January 1, 1825, when General Andrew Jackson arrived in what is now Jackson County to take up his new appointment as military governor of Tennessee. He ordered that all citizens be taxed for their support of the military and built two churches and a school in Jackson County to provide education for poor children who could not otherwise afford it. The town grew rapidly due to its location, access to water resources and easy transportation by wagon or horseback to other parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1850, cotton became an important economic factor in local life; several mills were built around this time to process cotton grown near Jackson County by slaveowners who shipped their crops into New Orleans or Boston for export. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Mississippi while Union forces fought in Virginia against secessionist rebels known asthe Lincoln Men, many residents chose not to fight because they thought that slavery would continue under Confederate rule rather than give up their system of oppression which they saw as unjust and unfair. Some people decided to cross over into Alabama so that they could join the Confederacy; these people are sometimes called "Jacksonians" because of this decision. By 1865, most inhabitants had sided with the Union side; however, some men from Jackson County continued fighting until reaching Winchester Station outside Nashville on April 9 before surrendering unconditionally three days later (April 11). This event marks one of America's first officially recognized POWs camps where Confederate officers were kept until 1865 - antebellum America had no such precedent! Aftermath: Many homes were destroyed or looted during Reconstruction (1868-1889) although much physical evidence still remains today including buildings used as stores/apartments/ restaurants etc., among other things

Jackson was laid out in 1810 by John Chilton and named for General Andrew Jackson. The town became a county seat in 1834. The first courthouse was built in 1840 and replaced in 1895. Jackson is located on the Cumberland River and has a small airport. The early settlers of Jackson were loggers who came from North Carolina and Virginia because of the great logging opportunities available there. By 1800, some farmers had started to settle around the new town site, but it wasn't until 1810 that John Chilton erected a house there as an inn and store. That year also saw the construction of the first courthouse which served district court for Marshall County until 1895 when it was moved to Knoxville. In 1830, Jacksonites voted to form their own local militia company called "The Volunteer Infantry". This company fought against Native Americans during the Creek War (1835-1837) and later served in Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1861 when Confederate forces invaded Tennessee they quickly realized that they needed an encampment on their side of Cumberland River so they built one just south of present day downtown Jacksonville where they called themselves "the Hoods." After September 11th many people decided that if something happened to President George Washington or Ulysses S Grant thenJackson would be next due to its large slave population (~90% white) as well as its strategic location between Chattanooga and Nashville making it attractive to raiders looking for supplies before moving on into more important areas like Kentucky or even Missouri near Memphis! So after much discussion about what should be done with all these slaves (many wanted them freed but no one wanted them livingons display case at county courthouse), a resolution was passed overriding a veto from Mayor Isiah Thomas urging his city council not to adopt resolutions calling for any emancipation or free defense measures against Shelby County's uprisings being led by Nathan Bedford Forrest! On December 3rd 1860 while under military guard at City HallJackson citizens peacefully assembled behind closed doors with ballots being cast on whether/not to secede from Unionism! After much argument chaired by Justice Elijah Parish Howe finally ruled that since slavery technically existed within Union lines already this Resolution did not amount to treasonous behavior since most people thought it didn't actually do anything! However this vote represented another turning point in history as future events would show... Aftermath: The Siege & Battle of Jacksonville On December 3rd 1860 while under military guard at City HallJackson citizens peacefully assembled behind closed doors with ballots being cast on whether/not to secede from Unionism! After much argument chaired by Justice Elijah Parish Howe finally ruled that since slavery officially existed within Union lines already this Resolution did not amount to treasonous behavior since most people thought it didn’t actually do anything! However this vote represented another turning point in history as future events would show... On January 6th 1861 Governor Andrew Johnson issued Order No 1&2 which ordered all southern states except Georgia intoUnion hands based off fraudulent voting practices known as “manifest Destiny” aka taking advantage of Black Codes preventing blacks from voting anywhere outside plantations!! So effective were these orders that within days over 310 rebel troops had been musterd around area including Price's Legion commanded by General William Tullahoma who arrived adjacentto our city limits just east of State Line Road!!! As things turned out only 191 men made it alive throughPrice's advance unit & subsequent skirmishes across open fields inside our walls resultingin 12 deaths (& several injuries) alongwith numerous homes & stores looted!!! But despite everything happening right outside our gates we managed stillTo hold out until February 9th when Price fell back retreating towards Cooke Valley!!!!!!!!!!!!! From hereon Out we basically surrendered completely becoming partof Confederate America.....
