Knoxville is a city in Tennessee, United States, and the county seat of Knox County. The population was 145,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis– Nashville–arrivalment Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city proper has a total area of 56 square miles (171 km2), while the annexed areas have an area of 99 square miles (290 km2). The first known reference to firearms being used in Knoxville comes from 1818 when General Israel Putnam encountered Native Americans near what is now downtown Knoxville. He noted that they were using "impromptu bows and arrows" against him and his men. putnam took some muskets he had with him and fired one shot into the air to show his force should the Indians attack again. In 1824, Major John Sevier organized a company of volunteers for service in Tennessee during the Mexican-American War. A group of men from Knoxville volunteered to join Sevier's unit and their captain gave them two pistols each as well as a sword and pistol holster with which to protect themselves while on duty. These pistols are said to be among the most famous weapons ever made in America – called "Seviers' Pistol". In 1828, four companies of riflemen from Knoxville joined General James Shields' brigade under Gen Rickover in Lee's Expedition against Kentucky forces led by Andrew Jackson. One gun sling was mentioned as having been lost during this engagement; it is possible that it was captured by Confederate troops during or after the battle if it still exists today( its whereabouts unknown).
