The history of Lebanon can be traced back to 1868 when John Fisk founded what would later become known as Lebanon after purchasing land from General William Troup near present day Athens-on-the-Hudson River. At first glance this may seem like a very short time frame given that many other communities had been established within months or even weeks including: Springdale (1869), Jacksonville (1870), Mount Juliet (1871), Martinsville (1872), Middleburg Heights (1873), Clarksville (1874) etcetera. However it is important to note that these communities were all started relatively small with only a few people living in each one before quickly expanding outwards into surrounding areas; something which didn’t always happen with later settlements such as Beirut which relied mainly upon agriculture for its growth).
