In the late 1800s, Manchester, Tennessee was a small town of just over 10,000 residents. However, it soon became known as the " Soft Gun Case Capital of the World."

Manchester, Tennessee is a city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 12,871 at the 2010 census. Manchester is the county seat of Williamson County. It is the home of Fort Knox National Military Park and the Manchester Municipal Airport.
The first settler in what would become Manchester was James Hogg in 1827. Many other early settlers were women and children who followed John Aiken's journey from Georgia overland to Williamsburg Landing on the Cumberland River as he surveyed land for a colony that would be called Nashville after his home state. On September 10, 1830, Nashville residents voted to change their name to "Manchester" in honor of their new townsite and Moberly Township which they had just established south of Nashville within what would become Davidson County.
Manchester became an important center for cotton textiles because it was closer than any other town to markets for these products throughout much of the 1800s. Cotton production boomed during this time due to advances in technology and engineering that made large-scale planting possible; also, railroads brought cotton production closer to people across America whenever they began operating northward (the first such railroad came into operation in 1825). By 1840, Manchester's population had grown to 20 residents and by 1850 it had reached 100 citizens. In 1853 Mayor Jno Ewing organized a local political organization known as the "First Presbyterian Church Committee" which among other things created a school board with powers over education within township limits
In 1861 Union General David Butler camped near present-day Manchester on his march through eastern Tennessee during the Civil War when General Anderson ordered all men between 21 and 50 years old not leave their homes without paying $10 gold pieces or deliver goods worth $100 or more to Confederate forces located east of Chattanooga into Union hands; all males under 21 years old were exempt from military service unless they possessed a father or guardian who paid money equivalent
This order caused great consternation among many young men who saw no chance of escape should they find themselves outside their townsite while supplies ran low; some put up posters reading "I'm too young for war but I'll be glad when it's over." However, by 1865 most men in Manchester had either received payoffs or been exchanged into Confederate armies before hostilities ceased overall
