The town of Martin, Tennessee was founded in 1859 by Captain Isaac Watts and his family. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had died in 1837. The first post office in the town was opened in 1860. In 1865, the town became a county seat of Hardin County. In 1870, the name of the county was changed to Knox County and Martin became its capital. In 1901, Knox County merged with Fayette County to form Knoxville County.
