Maryville is an unincorporated community in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Little Tennessee River. The population was 1,080 at the 2010 census. Maryville was founded in 1876 by William H. Goffe and his wife, Eliza A. Goffe. It post office was discontinued in 1906 and has been closed since then. The town of Maryville is named after General James Fenton's birthplace, Mount Vernon in Virginia, which lies about to the north-east of present-day Maryville on a stream that flows into the Little Tennessee River. General Fenton fought with distinction during the American Civil War under General Robert Ewell and against Confederate forces under Governor Andrew Johnson at Chickamauga Creek and other battles near Chattanooga before being wounded at Missionary Ridge on September 17, 1864. He died three days later from his wounds at Maryvale Hospital while still hospitalized; he had been promoted to Major general two days before his death and five weeks before he would have reached age 50 years old had he lived to see his promotion). In 1865 General Fenton's widow married Colston Montgomery, son of one of radial railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt's associates in Nashville., Colonel Montgomery served as mayor of Nashville from 1893 until 1901 when he resigned after being indicted for conspiracy to fix prices on gasoline products sold by a local oil company; this led to questions about whether or not collusion between city officials and energy interests might have been involved in Montrealtons' resignation (the charges were eventually dropped but created public interest). In 1919 Judge John Pritchett became judge of Knox County court having previously served as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court (1911-1915); during his term as judge Pritchett constructed part of what is now known as Main Street in downtown Maryville - this street runs along current US Highway 29 across from where Pritchett Park now stands -Pritchett Street likely replaced an earlier Indian trail path which ran through parts of downtown currently occupied by First National Bank Building (now called Woodward Avenue)and State Capitol Annex building (now known as Gaylord Place). Other buildings demolished or relocated during that time include: First Presbyterian Church (1896), Masonic Temple (1898), Methodist Episcopal Church (1900), Baptist Church (1901), Fourth Ward Businessmens Association Hall & Doge Hotel (?, 1918), Women's Christian Temperance Union Meeting House (?, 1918/1920) In 1951 a shopping center was built including several departments store anchors JCPenney (), Sears (), Macy's () and Neiman Marcus (). The development also included apartments above the department stores.; however due to limited competition withinMaryville Shopping Center over time it failed to gain much traffic and closed down in 1998 although some remnants remain today inside Neiman Marcus (). In 2000 a major new factory complex was built just outside town limits consisting mainly of Toyota Manufacturing Company plants producing vehicles like pickups,, SUVs,, vans etc.. The complex never came online but due to its proximity nearby Interstate 40 it continues produce fumes even though operators claim they are doing everything they can do control them.. At present there doesn't seem much hope for either redevelopment or abandonment given all that has happened recently
