On April 14th 1861 General Ewell reached Johnson Ferry Bridge over the Cumberland River just east of present-day Mc Minnville when he discovered that US forts Pillow and Donelson were garrisoned by Union troops under Federal General John Bell Hood from Chattanooga. After days of skirmishing Ewell assaulted these forts but they held out until reinforcements arrived from Hood’s superior forces under Abraham Lincoln.General Hood retreated back overriver to Mobile Bay where he again surrendered on April 17th 1865 after three months resistance against an American military force which had almost twice its size Today much of what used to be McMinnville has been destroyed by fires or abandonment due to economic decline over many years especially around downtown where one could still find abandoned storefronts up until recently What remains today are some high quality homes built between 1910-1920 by local businessmen Tom Gamble and Wirt Ahern
