Millington is located on the banks of the Mill Creek and forms a triangle with nearby Lebanon and Easton. The first white person to live in what is now Millington was Abram Biddle in 1819. A gristmill was built here by him in 1825 and it remains in operation as a mill today. In 1839, John Baird founded the Baird-Ferguson lumber company here which became one of the largest pulpwood producers in America. He also ran an academy here for girls until it closed its doors in 1911 due to budget cuts by local government officials. A post office called Millington was established here on October 9, 1853, and remained operational until it was discontinued on December 1, 1907. Millington has been home to many businesses over the years including: Baird-Ferguson Lumber Company (1839-2011), Hardin County Courthouse (1853-1959), First Baptist Church (1854-present), McCain Middle School (1970s), Knoxville Broadcasting Corporation Television Station KBCG (1957-2006) and numerous other small companies and institutions that have left their mark on this small town over time. It became a town on October 6, 1887. The first post office in Millington was established in 1824. The name of the post office changed to Millsboro on November 15, 1887. In 1907, the community of Highland Park merged with Millington and it became one municipality. On February 14, 1912, the towns of Fenton and Millsboro amalgamated to form millsboro-fentonville combined municipality. On March 1st 1915, this merger was undone when millerville-fentonville combining municipalities reverted to their separate identities as millerville and millsboro respectively. Millsboro has a rich history that dates back to its establishment as a small community over 100 years ago! Many of the cornerstone moments for this community occurred during World War I when both men and women took an active role in helping support our military! During that time there were many bombings and raids that took place throughout Hardin County which led to many buildings being destroyed including churches and homes! However, through all these hardships there have been some great moments that have happened within Millington’s past! For example; the city hall building which served as headquarters for numerous local government organizations during prohibition; or the renovation of older brick buildings into apartments back in the early 1970s which helped village growth! Additionally; Millington is home to two schools – Hardin County High School (HCHS)and Millsborough Elementary School (MEHS). These schools offer excellent education opportunities for students from surrounding communities which helps keep our ecosystem healthy!
