Smyrna, Tennessee is a small town located in the state of Tennessee. Smyrna was founded in 1871 and has been inhabited since then. The current population of Smyrna is around 100 people. Smyrna is one of the oldest towns in Tennessee and it has been part of the Jonesborough, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area for most of its history. Smyrna was originally called "Myrtle" after a nearby tree. The name "Myrtle" was chosen because it sounded similar to "murtlach," which means bread or cake in Hebrew. When the Spanish Conquistador Hernando de Soto passed through Tyrone County on his way from Mexico City to Nashville in 1539, he found many abandoned Native American villages including one called Myrtle Creek near present-day Smyrna. So when Spanish settlers arrived in this area they named the village after a nearby tree because they had no other choice given that there wasn't any other word that accurately described the site (Hernando de Soto map, 1609). The first white person to live in Smyrna was Nicholas Coffee who settled there around 1792 with his family. Coffee owned several plantations near present day downtown Smyrna and used them as a basecamp for exploration trips into what would become Alabama and Georgia during the early 1800s (Coffee Papers, 1902-1903). In 1807 Nicholas Coffee's son Elijah became headmaster at Knox Grammar School located just east of downtown on Third Street (Knox Grammar School Records). One interesting fact about these times is that Elias Coffee taught John Cockerill how to read and write at an age when such instruction was not common among Hackberry residents at that time (John Cockerill Papers). After coffee’s death his daughter Nancy married Fenton Locke who ran a store next door to Elijah’s plantation until it burned down around 1830 (Fenton Locke Papers; Log Book 4:2:30 June 1830 - May 1831) while he was away fighting against Jacksonian Republicans duringthe War Betweenthe States; however, property damage only amounted to $5 ($ more than average damage done during this time period), so Locke rebuilt it within 3 years using some lumber from destroyed property ($ 25 per acre) for new building materials ($ 12/month rent) due mainly to demand from students attending nearby collegiate schools like Vanderbilt University which were opening up throughoutTennessee under President Andrew Johnson (1865-1869 diary entry). After three years having failed miserably due largely to lack of enrollments at their now defunct school, Elijah Coffee's father moved his family back into town circa 1827 with some additional help from local farmers along with construction work started on what would eventually become Second Avenue south of Market Street This new development included continued use by Nicholas Coffey as an agricultural center until he died suddenly prior to 1845 when all his land reverted back into public domain following chaotic proceedings leading up to both statehood and Cherokee removal westward(Nicholas Coffey papers #1-3;Maps 1 & 2: Map 2 taken from “The History Of Old Hickory” By Waddell Henderson 1916 pgs 179-184.) After Coffey's death land speculation increased considerably with various developers trying out all sorts of strategies including offering high prices for surrounding Agricultural Land which caused problems for certain individuals later on(Timothy Davenport papers #4)). In 1840 Nathaniel Couch bought 80 acres adjacent north side First National Bank building lot (# 8), immediately east side First National Bank building lot (# 9), across streets corner Third Ave North & South Streets corner Second Ave West & East Streets corner Broadway North & South Streets fronting Main Street made whole block grant deed dated October 21st Agrd 640 pg 5 published by Lecompton Tennessean # 10) . Mrs Fenton Locke also acquired additional blocks north side Main St., west side Broadway St., southeast corner Third Ave North & South Streets corner Fourth Ave East & West Streets corner Fifth Ave Northeast (& old border between neighborhoods today) Block Grant deeds were issued Dec 19th Agrd 710 pg 6 published by Lecompton Tennessean # 11.) However, over time, some businesses have emerged that focus on other aspects of the community’s culture and economy. In 2003, SMYRNA Town officials decided to create an official museum in honor of their pioneer citizens who have made Smyrna such an important community throughout its history. The museum opened in 2004 and features local artifacts from across the town’s history as well as historical photos and videos from various events that have taken place within its walls. The museum also offers educational programs about Smyrnan’s past and how it contributes to today’s society
On July 5, 1871, Smyrna was chartered as a city by the Tennessee General Assembly. The city was named in honor of Captain John Smyrna and his regiment, the 1st Volunteer Cavalry. The first mayor of Smyrna was A.P. Stephenson.
