Under General Hogg's leadership, Smyrna grew rapidly into an important center of trade and commerce in Southeast Tennessee due to its location on the river and its strategic position between Cincinnati and Memphis. By 1896, Smyrnia had become one of America's largest cities with over 100 residents employed in various business sectors including transportation and communications; insurance; manufacturing; agriculture; retail trade; services; public works; education; health care delivery systems such as clinics and hospitals; among others . In addition to its economic importance within SoutheastTennessee, Smyrna also enjoyed renown for its architecture which included examples of Victorian Classicism / Gothic Revival architecture along with 19th century commercial buildings such as banks and hotelsismanated by their distinctive red brick facades or terra cotta ornamentation .
