Union City is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1859 by refugees from the American Civil War. Union City became an important manufacturing and agricultural center during the late 19th century and into the 20th century. In recent years, Union City has regained its former economic importance as a result of its location within the Chattanooga metropolitan area and its focus on downtown redevelopment. The city was named for local citizens who first gathered to form a town association in 1859. The name originated from a report that said "the mouth of Holston River [was] full of people, some of whom had traveled from distant parts to join us", referring to Union City as "the promised land". The town site was selected because it lay between two major rivers – the Cumberland River to the north and the Ohio River to the south – making it convenient for trade and transportation. In 1872, Union City saw its firsthetto established when African Americans were relocated from nearby Clarksville to provide labor on large plantations near present-day Shelbyville. The early black residents hoped that their new home would be affordable enough so they could maintain their standard of living while working nearer white society; however, many were forced out after only a few years due to discriminatory housing policies by whites. Over time though, many black residents integrated into white society through marriage or adoption; this process began slowly but surely in Union City because most African Americans who wanted to conform learned English well enough not TO become associated with their original community but rather live among their own kind. During World War II Union City played an essential role as one of several military sites around Chattanooga where Japanese nationals were held before being transport back home across America (see also: Camp Liberty). Afterward much of what remained of these camps have been demolished either for physical evidence or for reuse as businesses and homes today. The city has undergone several changes over time, including becoming a bedroom community for eastern Knoxville; being abandoned during World War II; experiencing rapid growth following World War I; becoming predominantly white following Reconstruction; and experiencing significant Racial tension during the late 1960s and early 1970s before achieving majority black status following passage of local non-discrimination ordinances in 1974 and 1978 respectively. From 1968 until 2002, Union City's mayoralty alternated between two Democrats: Lester Maddox (1948-1950) and Lamar Alexander (1975-1978). In 2002 incumbent Mayor Bud Powell won reelection unopposed with support from all major political parties after defeating his Republican opponent by almost 50%. Union City, Tennessee was founded in 1839 by George Washington and John Sevier as a post office on the Cumberland River. The town rapidly grew, and in 1849 it became the county seat of Union County. In 1861, Union City was attacked by Confederate forces during the American Civil War, and much of the town was destroyed. However, most of the city survived and prospered after the war. The population of Union City reached over 10,000 by 1910. By 1920, however, the city had shrunk to fewer than 1,000 people. In 1940 Union City merged with nearby Lenoir County to form Lenoir County Boroughs.
