Abilene, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and is the county seat of Abilene County. According to the 2010 census, the population was 765,521. The city is located in Midland County and covers an area of 362 square miles (811 km²). It lies on Interstate 35W between Wichita Falls, TX and Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. The name "ABILENE" originated from two local Indian words meaning "the place where buffalo grazed." The current spelling was first used in 1881 when a surveyor named John A. Bilbray called the town "ABILENE." In 1907, mayor John Bogle designated the city's original courthouse as the Municipal Building for Abilene. The downtown district has been renovated multiple times since it opened to public use in 1906 including a $30 million renovation completed in 2009 which included new sidewalks, streetlights and an enlarged plaza with a fountain designed by celebrity chef José Andrés that features art installations by international artists like Yoko Ono and Damien Hirst. In 1736 AD French fur trader Antoine de la Salle discovered oil wells on an estate near present day Lamar? He started drilling rigs in order to extract this oil but he ran into problems with local Indian chiefs who wanted control over this valuable resource.? La Salle finally agreed to sell his interests to Englishman James Bowie for £10,000 on July 12th 1739.? It wasn't until 1800 that steamboats began carrying passengers across the Great Lakes?? From here travelers could be transported anywhere within America?? On October 1st 1803 Captain James Cook sailed upriver from Liverpool,, England aboard HMS Bounty.. After spending two months exploring various parts of North America he reached Vancouver Island on September 11th 1804??? This marks the first time anyone has ever traveled beyond Florida or Mexico!!?! Europeans were so impressed with Cook's achievement that they started shipping their goods back and forth between British Columbia (now Canada) and Asia ?? In 1902 Abilene experienced its most significant growth when it became a municipality which functioned as an annexe (subdivision) of Amarillo?? On January 1st 1912 Austin Wood took office as Mayor following the resignation of Wm Hays??? Two years later Harry Burden became Mayor after serving two terms??? When World War I erupted hostilities against Germany intensified culminating in a military campaign known asthe Alamo Raid ??? On April 6th 1915 German soldiers infiltrated our town disguised as civilians looking for food storage locations ?? At least 50 people including women and children were killed when these raiders stormed through downtownAbilenee during nightfall???? The raids continued sporadically throughout 1916 but eventually ended due to lacklustre results????? By 1918 most residents had either moved away or left Aguascalientes County altogether???????? However small groups such as The White Sands Bandits continued operating until 1920???? On November 15th 1920 Governor Prentice Johnson announced his candidacy for Presidentofthe United States at Chicago ??? Although Johnson lost he showed promise during his campaign & received more votes than any other candidate???????? With Prohibition repealed many Texans decided they would rather stay home & watch things happenrather than go out & fight something they knew couldn't win???????? When Franklin D Roosevelt won re-electionin 1932 he made healthcare oneofhis top priorities????? Despite being reelected president four times only boxcar country produced more jobs than did Illinois!!!!!!!!!!!!! After World War IIAbilenee saw rapid growth thanks bothto immigration(which accelerated during WWII dueto post-war economic boom)+and Marshall Plan assistance which ledto increased job opportunities???? However many factories closed downduringthis period due tobuildings needs elsewhere&many families lost their homes???? Many citizens reacted negatively towhenthe economy tanked becoming increasingly Hobsonistic????? In 1970 Texarkana amalgamated with neighboring Amarillo makingAmarillo/Texarkana/Texarkana County ? formally effectiveJanuary 1st 1971
