Alton's economy is based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing activity including construction materials and parts for autos and other vehicles. A large number of residents are employed in local government services such as firefighting and law enforcement. A post office has been in operation at Alton since 1888.
Alton was founded by James W. Alton in 1871 as the town of Alton, Texas. The town became a city in 1907 and was named for Alton, Illinois, where James W. Alton had settled in 1851.
