Alton is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,494 at the 2010 census. Alton is located on the southern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Regional Airport. The first people to live in what is now Alton were Mexican settlers who came from Pecos County, New Mexico in 1847. By 1850, there were about 25 families living here. A post office was opened in 1853 and named for Alton's founder J. S. Almonte (1813-1870). A store and hotel were built here by 1857 and 1860 respectively; both are still standing today. In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg was headquartered at Fort Worth during his invasion of Texas and he lent aid to General Sherman's army while they fought against Union forces near here. Sherman then ordered his unit to march south through this area and into central Texas where they destroyed several stores before reaching Pecos County on July 10th 1865 - less than a week after Bragg's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia! Some believe that Alton may have been founded earlier as an Indian village known as Kincaid which stood near present day Bowie Lakeouachie on Hennepin County Road 9 W just north of Interstate 15 off US 75W between Bowie Lakeouachie and Kincaid Hills; however no evidence has been found to support this claim yet! The name "Alton" comes from two local Native American words: "alla" meaning place or field where corn grows, "honta" meaning watercourse or stream leading thereto - hence it would mean 'place where corn grows'. On February 16, 1861 John Denver sent a letter to the editor of The Independent newspaper (now Houston Chronicle) proposing that all future towns be named after historical persons or events who had contributed materially thereto – such as Andrew Jackson or Brigham Young! This idea caught on with other residents and soon enough Alton had become its namesake... even though no one knew exactly when it happened! On October 3rd 1861 Samuel Barber sent a letter to The Enterprise newspaper proposing that all new towns bear their first initial only – not their current names – in order to show them off more prominently to visitors! After much debate among townspeople about whether or not this should happen (!), it did! In honor of Mr. Barber’s suggestion though most everyone continued to call themselves “Alanson” until 1900 when county officials started using their original name for public purposes only (e.g., US 75W Community Development Center). Most recently some citizens have started using their current last initial instead which stand for 'Almont'…thus continuing America's unofficial policy of granting each new community its own unique nickname!!! A post office called “Plymouth” was established at Plymouth on November 5th 1851 under the direction of Colonel Josiah Darlington(1796-1868), commanding officer of Company C militia regiment east Tennessee Volunteers during the Mexican War.(1) It served until 1840.(2) In 1840 Plymouth Postmaster James Younge became interested in growing cotton so he leased land northwest of town from George Pease.(3) He organized a school district with six schools including one for girls which opened in 1851.(4) On December 1st 1840 Withdrawal Order No 7 issued by Governor Cradlebaugh closed Fort Worth valley due largely to overpopulation problem caused by Hawkeye gold Rush(5)(6)(7)(8)! As orders went out daily throughout much portionsofTexas troops evacuated individuals along freeways like I-35W en route back home.(9)(10)! Plymouth Post Office Closed January 1st 1841 At Which Point Allfuturetowns Be Named For Historical Persons Or Events Only!!!!!!!!!!
