In 1881, John PemberTON built a cotton gin and mill on the banks of the Colorado River in what is now Alton. This gave the town its name; PemberTON's cotton gin (and other business enterprises) were located near present-day Mohawk Road and Valley Boulevard. The gristmill operated until 1907 when it became an oil well driller. The railroad arrived in 1902 and by 1905 Alton had a telephone line and an express office. In 1906 James Gamble founded the Gamble Manufacturing Company which manufactured radios and televisions for sale abroad. A new water tower with electric lights was completed in 1909 to replace an older one that had been destroyed by fire. By 1928 there were 10 businesses in town employing over 150 people including a bakery (the White Daisy Bakery), ice cream parlor (the Cream Lady), tailor shop (Bella Belle clothes store), insurance agent (Wyatt & Hogan Insurance Agency), photographer (George Hagerty Photography), livery stable (Century Liverystable Co.), physician (Driscoll & Sons Physicians' Office), grocery store (.50 cent groceries only) and three churches: First Baptist Church (.75 acre lot purchased from George Hagerty for $325 total cost including building costs) - started as Trinity Methodist EpiscopalChurch moved from Hutchinson to Alton in 1911; Second Baptist Church (.50 acre lot purchased from George Hagerty for $325 total cost including building costs) - started as Third Baptist Church but left after one year because of lack of memberships; Presbyterian church - built 1912 but not used until 1945 when it was rededicated as Christ United Methodist EpiscopalChurch In 1915 Ethel Mapes became World War I’s first female aviator when she piloted an unassembled Aircraft Carrier into combat over Europe with American Expeditionary Force pilots aboard her aircraft carrier USS "Pensacola" . After serving two years as navigator during World War I she returned home to America where she married George Seaton Mapes who also served in World War I; they raised six children before he died suddenly aged 43 years old on May 2nd 1942 while flying his F4U Corsair fighter Squadron over Japan

Alton is a city in the Edwards Plateau of Texas, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. Alton was founded in 1881 by men from Illinois and is named for Alpheus Ames. It became a city in 1907. The first post office in Alton was established on October 10, 1881. The original town plat included four blocks of land south of present-day Main Street and east of Seventh Avenue. The first successful crop grown in Alton was corn, which was brought to the area by wagonloads from Illinois during the early 1880s. By 1895, there were two cotton sidings along Buffalo Bayou north of town and three flour mills that manufactured flour, feed grains, bricks, mortar and other building materials for local farmers. A new high school replaced an old one built in 1886 on Prairie View Road east of Main Street when it burned down in 1903; this school later became Lamar University's School of Business Administration and Law School before merging with UT Austin's College of Engineering to form UT Austin's School of Science & Technology in 1996. In 1907, the city Beautiful Act made it illegal for businesses to use billboards or physical advertising without prior written consent from all property owners within a certain radius around any municipality—this law helped spur development around downtown Alton (then called "the business district"). In 1916Alton had its first street lights; these were powered by dynamos from power lines passing through nearby Fort Worth as part of Big Bend Electric Cooperative Extension Service program. By 1920A group led by J M Hinton purchased 8 acres (3 ha) southeast corner First Street between Sixth Avenue West and Elm Drive for $5 per acre ($204 total). This site would become home to the now dominant Olde World Pizza restaurant chain that began operations there on December 15th 1924 under owner Angelo Ronzoni Sr., with his son Angelo Ronzoni Jr.'s help starting up Papa John's Pizza six years later on November 14th 1948 In 1930 construction began on what would become known as Fifth Third Bank Building located at 401 E 6th Ave; this structure served as both primary branch headquarters until 1979 when it moved into its current location across Main Street from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company Incorporated buildings where it remains today
