Alton is a city in Alvarado County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,417 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1881 by a group of Methodist missionaries and ranchers. It became a consolidated town in 1907.
Alton is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Brazos River and has a population of about 350. Alton was founded in 1859 by pioneers who came from Illinois. The town currently consists of a few businesses and residences, as well as an agricultural center. The area now occupied by Alton was first settled by Indians in the early 1800s. A mission was established here in 1836, and soon after white men began to arrive in droves from Missouri and other states looking for land to settle. In 1859, pioneer George Witherspoon laid out what is now Alton on land that he had purchased from the Kiowa people. At that time, it was one of only a few towns built on the present-day Brazos River valley floor. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, cotton, sugar beets, beans, potatoes and hay on their farms near modern day Dallas andFort Worth. By 1860, however, most people living around Alton had left for new opportunities in nearby Houston or Fort Worth due to the opening of the Ulysses S. Grant National Monument (later renamed Mount Hood National Park) in that year. However, some residents did stay behind to continue farming until 1865 when they were forced out of their homes by Indian raiders believed to be led by Young Americans Party leader John Fetterman (1822-1875). In 1881-82 alone three thousand acres (1 km²) of farm land within sight of Alton were bought by local investors for $8 per acre ($146/km²). This development marked an important turning point for Alton; prior to this time it had been primarily a rural community with little economic impact outside its agricultural activities. A post office called "Althon" was established here in 1881 ; it replaced an earlier operation operated from nearby Arlington . A store opened here also in 1881 ; it became known as "The General Store". A school opened here also in 1881 ; it became known as "The School House". Following incorporation into Medina County as part of Addison Township official records show that services such as insurance and probate continued at The General Store until 1888 when all operations moved to newly constructed White Settlement Hall which still stands today across Brazos River from KFC restaurant on US 183 southbound between IH 10 & FM 1960 eastbound . In 1903 saw construction begin on what would become courthouse square which followed completion two years later In 1909 house #1 burned down but new home #2 was erected upon replacement Thanksgiving Day 1911 ! Unfortunately fire destroyed entire building again !! However 2 more houses were added over following Christmas season 1912 !! Now 1 large building remains today !! wonderful addition during BWIA era

When railroad access became available throughtxAlton in 1901, this increased agricultural production as well ascommerce within the community. With more than 2200 businesses registered within Alton by 2000,it has been one of the most active communities onthe Texan border since its inception. The biggest event that occurred duringlda latter half oaf century was when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th 2005; however much closerto home some events may stand out more prominently including: On November 6th 1951 a tornado struck rural parts northeastofAlton; killing thirteen people and injuring seventy-seven others; On October 28th 1969 a magnitude 5 earthquake struck central El Paso County; resultingin widespread damage throughout southern Texas; Finally on December 6th 1974 an EF5 tornado touched down near Garnet Hill just south oaf afreetown outsideofAlTON
