Benbrook is a small town in Lubbock County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. Benbrook is located in east-central Texas on the Arkansas River. It straddles the border of Baylor and Fort Worth Counties. The first European to see Benbrook was José de la Cueva on July 3, 1684 when he anchored his ship "Santa Fé" near what is now Benbrook Lake. Spanish traders and missionaries traveled through this area for many years before permanent settlement began in 1836 by J. G. Richardson and others from Wichita Falls, Texas who named their new community after Captain James Balfour who had expedited United States annexation of Mexico in 1835. In 1865 the US General Order No 1 called for all citizens of all Mexican possessions west of the Rio Grande to come into compliance with Union government policy that established equal citizenship rights for all persons within the newly created United States including those living inside Mexican boundaries until such time as Mexico solved its political problems or until they were satisfied that such residents were ineligible for citizenship because of their Indian status or lack thereof. This order also ordered all land grants made since 1840 to Menard & Co., which included present day Benbrook Township, be cancelled and redistributed among other claimants thereto according to population size rather than being granted outright to any one claimant or group of claimants thereby reducing incentive for settler development outside existing ranching and farming lands adjacent toMexican reservations northward along both banks of the Arkansas River." Permanent residents constituted only about 10% (the rest being settlers from Wichita Falls) but soon naturalized citizens began arriving as well so that by 1887 there were over 100 people residing in Benbrook Township alone including 60 Anglo Americans (predominantly men), 30 Mexicans (mostly women), 11 Native American Indians (all Mescaleros), six families from Wichita Falls (the Hays family) plus friends/relatives of these men and women who had moved here during Invasion Week prior to November 22nd when Mexico announced it would not recognize the US Constitution without ratification by its own people resulting in US annexation WITHOUT ANY PARLIAMENTARY PROCEEDINGS OR CONSIDERATION OF THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE! Although some cattle ranchers did set up temporary camps outside Mexican reservations while they awaited news regarding their claims they ultimately left behind Dodge City due mainly to economic reasons – lack of water availability on most Ranchlands relative topresent dayrequisites; high prices demanded by buyers pertaining especiallyto centralized market wagon drives between San Antonio & El Paso during late 1800s; military action against Apache bandits throughout muchof Colorado Valley during mid 1800s.; repeated threats made against these same bandits throughout period culminating withraid on Pueblo d' Española January 14th 1860.)" In 1907, the LDS church purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land in what is now Benbrook and began developing it into a town. The first store opened in 1914. By 1920, Benbrook had a population of 3,500 people and a post office. The first real school opened in 1922; it later became known as Midland High School. In 1933, the name of the town was changed to Benbrook Township due to an effort by its trustees to promote agricultural development within township boundaries The early years of Benbrook were difficult for both residents and businesses because there were no roads or railsroads available to transport goods between townships or anywhere else in Midland County at that time.
