During World War II, local industries produced goods for military use including airplanes, tanks and other equipment; coffee beans for Japanese troops; jeans for American soldiers; cigarettes for American smokers; bricks for building construction; shoes for civilian consumers; and munitions production plants such as those at Sam Houston Toll Road near Rusk Road. Carrollton is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Carrollton is named after Major General John A. Carroll and his family who settled there in 1853. The first post office in Carrollton was established in 1854 and was called "Cameron." In 1870, the community had a population of 2,500 and it became a city on April 15, 1893 when it incorporated as Carrollton City Park by an act of the Texas Legislature. By 1910, Carrollton's population had grown to 10,000 people and it became an independent city again on January 1, 1912 when it joined the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. On December 12, 1930 the city limits were expanded to include portions of Garland and Richardson counties which made Carrolton one of its original six districts (the others being Irving Heights/Hillsboro Municipal District; Plano Municipal District; Richardson Municipal District; University Village/University Place/Uptown Plaza]; Rossville Municipal District). The downtown business district has been around since before 1900 when local farmers started selling eggs from their cages during Lent weekdays outside their homes. The early grocery stores included Champion Grocery (now known as Kroger), Smith’s Drug Store & Meat Market (now JCPenney), Nichols Drug Store & Millinery Shop (now Sears), Allis Chalmers Lumber & Hardware Company (now Home Depot), First National Bank (later CitizensBank) and Gossett’s Dairy Store until 1924 when all these businesses closed because of prohibitionism then World War II stopped production at most industries so no more stores opened up for many years although some reopened after that time such as Gossett’s Ice Cream Parlor which reopened in 1984 following bankruptcy filed by mom-and-pop ice cream cart owners). During prohibition period this town got its start with bootlegging near old railroad tracks but soon turned into a major gambling center where gamblers would go to gamble while they waited for trains or cars to get out of town offering chances worth $5 or $10 each depending on how good the chance was according to one account written by journalist Edward Jones about 1916: “In short there are various ways through which gamblers may purchase recreation if they desire it: baseball cards can be bought at any stand along either railway track or river crossings; poker chips can also be obtained from saloons known as “champion fields” open late into night; blackjack tickets can be taken from several longitude points east or west of Carthage township line generally about midway between Buffalo Gap road crossing point northwest of Carthage settlement junction with Red River valley highway just past Springdale schoolhouse...Gambling establishments sprang up throughout eastern Cameron county during Prohibition period—at least twenty-five different operations were licensed within four months after statehood—most extensive clusters being located near Carthage township line approximately midway between Buffalo Gap road crossing point northwest of Carthage settlement junction with Red River valley highway just past Springdale schoolhouse...This type [gambling] activity continued unabated until shortly before World War II when production at most industries ceased due to prohibitionism then war interrupted development." On March 9th 1920 Kemp Weldon opened his first store in what is now Beaumont Street location across from KFC ever since he sold candy bars door to door making him one of earliest chain store proprietors anywhere in America still running today under new ownership

In 1923, Carrollton became an independent city under the name Austin after its incorporation as a municipality; its original City Council consisted solely of white citizens. In 1966, Austin annexed Carrollton as part of its urban area and changed its name to Austin-Round Rock; however, Carrollton retains its own governance and local government within theAustin metropolitan area.
