For many years following his purchase, Mr. Carrol operated a cotton plantation near this location known as White Sands Plantation; however, he sold this property in 1916 to Jethro Cramer for $5 million dollars creating one of the largest cotton plantations ever established in Texas (Moses Hirschfeld). The completion of the Oklahoma-Texas Completion Railroad arrived at an important time for Carroltown because it connected two major markets – Tulsa with Dallas and Austin with Houston – making it necessary for new residents to have access to these vital industries. However, soon after this important development occurred, Carroltown began losing its economic importance due to factors such as population growth within Tulsa or Austin itself instead of outside competition (Hirschfeld). This trend continued until 1951 when Interstate 10 bypassed Carroltown completely which caused a sudden reversal in fortunes; since then, little has changed regarding Carroltown’s status quo (Fletcher).
