Carrollton is a town in southeastern Texas, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's name comes from General George Washington Carver who settled there in 1881. The first Europeans to visit what is now Carrollton were French traders and missionaries in the early 1800s. In 1821, Stephen F Crockett purchased land northeast of present-day Carrollton from the tribe of Comanche Indians for $1 million dollars. The area then became known as Crockett's Ranch because of this purchase. After Stephen F Crockett's death in 1875, his son John W Teller took over his father's ranch and continued to operate it until 1907 when he sold it to JW Searles & Brothers Incorporated for $5 million dollars which made it one of the largest cattle ranches in Texas history. The original settlers who located here included citizens of Georgetown and other nearby towns such as Round Rock and San Marcos. A post office was organized in 1889, but no mail ever reached Carrollton because only wagons could carry mail at that time! One possible reason why this was so is that fact that at that time there wasn't any railroads connecting these villages together! In 1902, Charles Goodyear established an oil refinery onshore off the coast of Galveston Bay which led to the growth of shipping traffic through town center (now downtown) into those days! One local landmark still existing today is Goodyear’s oldRefinery Building which can be seen adjacent to Highway 290 just south of Interstate 10 eastbound lanes; access is available from US 90/US 281 northbound lanes). This building once housed Goodyear’s crude oil production facility until its closure in 2001 after more than 50 years operations! A few years ago, new retail development began near I-10 exit 287B eastbound lanes by Pinnacle Peak Realty - providing much needed economic development presence within walking distance of many locally popular restaurants including City Park BBQ & Grill (formerly known as Longhorn Steakhouse), Joe’s Place Diner ( formerly White Sands Trading Post), KFC Country Club Plaza(Formerly Ruby Tuesday), Carthage Coffee House( Formerly First National Bank Of Texas), Hungry Horse Saloon( formerly Texaco StarTexan) along with several small businesses generating good jobs for locals during busy times... That being said much continues to improve daily with Downtown Development Authority vision statement "Carrollton 2030" !! Carrollton, Texas is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas, about 25 miles south of Dallas and 20 miles north of Austin. The population was 3,852 at the 2010 census. It is named after General John A. Carroll who fought in the Mexican-American War and founded what is now Carrollton on November 16, 1836. The first permanent settler in what is now Carrollton was James Knoppers who arrived in 1836 from Illinois and built a log cabin on an old cotton plantation near present-day FM 620/US 281. Other early settlers included Drury & Miller who came to live in 1860; Hutton & Currie who arrived in 1870; and Price & Griffiths who arrived in 1880 from Georgia. In 1892, when the railroad reached Carrollton it became one of its first stations with goods yards and passenger cars being built near US Highway 624 (now US 281). Passenger service increased rapidly as new businesses were established such as a grocery store, post office, hotel, bakery and laundry until World War II when air travel replaced rail transport as the primary means of transportation for locals and travelers alike. Carrollton’s importance began to grow during World War II when thousands of local men worked on production plants for munitions manufacturers across North America including Fairchild Aircraft Corporation (later Boeing) which operated out of their plant until 1970; Lockheed Martin which produced missiles from their Plant 4 until 2006; Bell Helicopter Textron Company which manufactured helicopters out of their Plant 5 until they closed down operations in 2009;and Texaco Incorporated which operated a large refinery here until they sold it to ChevronTexaco Corporation effective January 1st 1999.) Postwar growth brought new development such as several high school campuses that opened up space within walking distance for residents while also creating housing developments such as Park Courts complex which has over 100 units today.. At present day there are more than 50 businesses serving Carrollton with notable locally owned businesses including One Stop Grocery Store (closed 2016), Ponds BBQ restaurant (& bar), Starbucks Coffee Company (& shop), Future Shop (clothing store) - all open every day except Christmas Day(!), Jerry’s Cannery Restaurant (closed 2017), Pizza Hut ® , Sonic Drive-In®, Taco Bell ® , convenience stores like Petrolux Oil Refinery - currently closed but reopen every weeknight under different ownership (), KOCH Media Group's TV station CW13 - available 24/7 online or analogue on channel 56 - satellite receivers required., Carousel Theatre located just off US 281 eastbound lanes adjacent to Kroger Supermarket ($)
Carrollton was founded in 1876 by J.D. Carroll, who named it for his father-in-law, James Denton Carroll. The city's first store was built on the corner of Third and Houston Streets. In 1881, Carrollton became the county seat of Midland County and J.D. Carroll donated land to build a courthouse and jail. In 1907, the city annexed neighboring San Angelo as part of its growth. In 1924, the Texas Legislature changed the name of Midland County to Dallas County and charters were issued for new cities in Dallas and Arlington within Carrolton boundaries
