Carrollton was incorporation in 1859 and became a city in 1871. The first post office was established here on July 2, 1861. The first store, located at the corner of High and Market streets, opened in 1865. In 1870, a sawmill was built on the east side of town and began operating. In 1873 a grist mill was built and started operation. A cotton gin followed in 1879. By 1904 there were six businesses with seventy-four employees here. The population of Carrollton reached 4,100 by 1910. Manufacturing declined during World War I but increased afterward; production peaked at 1 million pounds in 1925 but then dropped to 700 thousand pounds by 1930 due to the Great Depression. Today Carrollton is a small community with around 350 residents and limited manufacturing capabilities
