In 1865, one hundred men and boys from Kentucky under command of Captain John Marshall traveled through Medina County on a military expedition seeking new land to settle after being told by President Abraham Lincoln that none could be found east of Texas (other than Alamo). After verifying these news reports via courier service Colonel Steedman prepared himself and his battalion for departure but events intervened preventing them from leaving< ref>[1] < br />< br />On January 9 Colonel Steedman learned from locals about Confederate skirmishes happening miles away between Danville Barracks and Fredericksburg Heights so he decided to make a quick retreat back home instead sending word back home via stage coach.

After the war, Carrollton experienced growth as an industrial center and then (after 2000) as a bedroom community for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The current economy is based largely on education and health care services.
