Carrollton, Texas is a town located in Dallas County, Texas. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by General James G. Carroll and his wife Jane Bigham. Today, Carrollton is known for its shopping district and downtown area which contains many businesses and shops including Macy's Department Store, Searswebkit and JCPenney. The first settlers in the area were the Carters who came from Maryland in 1827. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking what is now downtown Carrollton. By 1830, they had several more homes built around this time including one near where I-635 crosses Elm Street today. Records show that General James G. Carroll purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land east of present day Elm Street from Joshua Brown for $2 per acre ($/ha). This land became known as "Carroll's Ranch" after General James G . Carroll's son, John A . Carrion Jr., who lived there until his death in 1893. In 1881, General James G . Carrol sold his interest in "Carroll's Ranch" to Captain Rufus Dorman for $10 per acre ($/ha). Dorman ran an oil field out of this ranch until he sold it to Colonel Edwin M . Sherman for $5 per acre ($/ha), making it one of the most important oil properties during World War I because it produced millions of gallons (1 million liters) of gasoline every day! After World War I ended, Colonel Edwin M . Sherman donated much of this property to the city of Dallas so that it could be used as parkland and other purposes! In 1939 when Arlington County was created within Dallas County, part of it included lands around present day Houston Avenue and McCulloch Road within Arlington Heights limits - these areas were then annexed into Carrollton Township when that township was established on December 15th 1938 boundarieschangedfromHoustonavenueand McCullochroadtoArlingtonheightsontimespenditureshowingthetownofcarrolltonwasincorporatedonApril14th1940.(See map below.) On May 14th 1942 Rev H C Marshall organized a farmers market outside courthouse doors with produce from local growers + meat from slaughterhouses nearby on 5th & Clear Streets corner lot between Masonic Temple & Brazos Road

The growth of cotton farming during the late 19th century resulted in an increased demand for goods produced within the town limits. This led to businesses such as groceries, clothing stores, hardware stores, lumberyards and more opening up throughout Carrolton. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size today with a population of over 1,200 people living within its boundaries.
Carrollton was founded in 1859 by Captain John Carroll, who named it for himself. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and by 1875 had a population of over 1,000 people. It continued to grow rapidly until 1907, when the railroads arrived in town and stopped its growth. By that time, Carrollton had become an agricultural center with a large cotton crop. However, by the late 1920s and 1930s, Carrollton’s economy had changed completely due to the advent of industry in the area. In 1933, Henry Ford established his first car manufacturing plant in nearby Midland and began using Carrolton as its production site. This led to a significant uptick in business activity throughout the 1970s and 1980s; however, recent economic trends have seen Carrollton lose some of its former prosperity.
