Many residents were drafted or sent away to fight in World War II but most returned home when hostilities ended. After the war, many businesses closed down while others moved out due to pollution concerns caused by newly developed oil fields nearby. Crime rates also decreased during this time as people turned to other forms of entertainment instead of crimesters operating outside the law During the late 1960s through early 1970s there were several restrictive zoning ordinances passed by Hudspeth County government that limited growth within certain boundaries; these ordinances have been repealed or amended since then despite having significantnegative effect on community life In 1971, an act was passed by Congress recognizing Hudspeth County's unique history and designation as an Indian reservation; this Act created cultural awareness among non-native residents about aspects of Native American culture that previously had not been appreciated In 1982, voters elected Jerry Dickey as mayor after he campaigned on creating jobs within the city limits rather than restrictions placed upon growth around controversial shopping malls adjacent to downtown . Dickey successfully lobbied for passage of ordinances allowing more housing development within designated urban renewal zones without permits from city planners such as himself .
