When the United States acquired Texas in 1836, it included all of the present-day Mexican state of Chihuahua as well. The land was heavily contested by both sides, and until 1845 there was no organized government in Texas. For a time, El Paso played an important role as the capital of Texas. The city was founded on July 16, 1846 by Antonio López de Santa Anna and his men after they successfully defended Mexico City from American attack. With only a few hundred residents at its peak, El Paso quickly grew into one of the largest cities in America. It became known for its vibrant nightlife and easy access to trade with surrounding Mexico. The city struggled during the 1840s and 1850s due to epidemics of smallpox and cholera that swept across Mexico. However, through partnerships with other cities such as Austin and San Antonio, El Paso bounced back and prospered during these difficult times. By 1860, however, El Paso had lost most of its population to migration to new settlements throughout what is now southernTexas. After years of hard work by Mayor Manuel Avilés y Peña (1851-57) and others in order to keep El Paso alive economically, it became one of America’s most successful mining towns when gold was discovered near Comalco in 1858. In 1861 Houston seceded from Texas following their own civil war effort; El Paso remained part of the new state while Houston moved closer to New Mexico Territory. The city experienced another boom period during Reconstruction (1865-1913), thanks in part to investments by businessmen such as George Wickersham Sr., who financed infrastructure projects such as water supply systems and housing developments During World War I (1914-18), distribution centers for ammunition were constructed withinEl Paso limits; this helped increase production for munitions companies operating outside America overall After World War II ended in 1945 – coinciding withel pueblo’s centennial celebration – economic stability returned although Hispanics made up only about 25%of downtown business people . This decline began again following NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) ratification which caused many job losses across much of U S industry ; nevertheless ,El Pueblo continued celebrating its centenary events every year until 2000 when pundits predicted that it would become increasingly irrelevant due to demographic changes toprospects for tourism In 2006 Mayor Rubén Arellano decided notto celebrate 100 years since US acquisition but focus on enhancing community services including homeland security
