Highland, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio-Bexar Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Highland was Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1519. He and his party discovered a valley with irrigation canals and traded with local tribes. Controversy surrounds whether or not Coronado actually visited the present day Highland but it is believed he did so because it was then an important location for cattle drives from Zacatecas into this area. The town's founding date is unknown but it likely occurred around 1875 when Scotsman John Laird founded Clear Fork Ranch near present-day junction of FM 571 and SH 171A. Laird named his ranch after his home parish in Sutherlandshire, Scotland - Highlanders had long been known to wander through this region looking for new land to settle. Laird built a cabin on theranch and started farming crops which he sold to early settlers for use as currency in their trade with Native Americans. By 1870, much of Clear Fork Ranch had been developed into what would become Highland – including many homes, churches and schools – making it one of the most sizable towns west of the Rio Grande during its initial days as a frontier outpost. In 1876, local farmer James Fergusson established himself at present-day Robertson Road and FS 21st Street while another early settler by that name homesteaded on the east side of White Sands Lake just east of today's intersection of FM 571 (now US 281) and SH 171A (now IH 35W). In 1877 Fergusson married Jessie Murchison who came from nearby Odessa along with her young family; they moved permanently to Highland in 1880 after purchasing 640 acres northeast of Robertson Road from David Aherns & Co., ranchers who had come north from Pecos County two years earlier on similar stock drive connected via wagon train with Bureau Land Department holdings located southward along Mexican Border about 10 miles southwest of today’s town limits just southwest of FM 571/SH 71A junction where US 281 presently intersects IH 35W: these were manured pastures used by Adobe Walls Cattlemen’s Cooperative until 1946 when those operations were transferred to Midland livestock operation operated by Sullivans Brothers Incorporated; later absorbed by Brown brothers Incorporated.) An early schoolmaster at Highlands was Rev Dr Wm Loyd who served intermittently between 1865-1868 before moving upriver to serve as pastor at Missionary Baptist Church in Cameronville before returning several times during 1869-1870 & again beginning late summer 1870 until finally departing for good on October 1st following general election held November 6th viz: Dr Lloyd has resigned effective October 1st 1870 effective 9 months ahead Of Governmental Regulations requiring all Ministers having unexpired term To retire At 70 Years Of Age!
