The history of highland begins with several groups who journeyed through this region searching for new landholdings within what would become Dallas County specifically because it offered isolation from other settlements then present day Arlington Heights within Vernon County providing fertile ground for cattle raising operations along Trinity River floodplain extending northerly into Garland County; these early pioneers developed Austin’s First Ward including parts now part of Highland Park

The original residents of Highland were Scottish immigrants who came to work on farms in the area. By 1921, there were over 1,500 people living in Highland with about 50 businesses. In 1932, Highland became an independent municipality and has worked to maintain its unique culture ever since. The town has several attractions such as a golf course, art museum, library, and theater. In addition to its cultural assets, Highlanders also enjoy hunting and fishing opportunities for their sporty lifestyle.
In 1827, the first Presbyterian church in Highland was built. In 1840, the first school opened in Highland. The population of Highland grew quickly and by 1850, there were over 100 residents. By 1870, the town had a post office, a public library, a blacksmith shop, and two churches.
