Highland, Texas is located in the central part of Texas and is bordered by Baylor County to the south, Denton County to the east, and Dallas County to the north. The population was 11,471 at the 2010 census. Highland is known for its rolling hills, flowing rivers, and scenic drives. The name "Highland" comes from a Scottish surveyor who named a location near present-day Highlandtown after his home country. The first residents of what is now Highland were French Canadians who settled in what is now Fort Worth in 1836. They soon lost their land holdings when Texas became an independent country. In 1853, Scotsman James Bowie acquired 640 acres of land east of present-day downtown Dallas along Buffalo Bayou. He named it Bowie Ranch after himself and developed it into a cattle ranch that supplied both sides of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After Mexico surrendered on Sept. 10, 1847, Bowie sold his land to Stephen Fevord in 1865 for $14 per acre. settlers began arriving in significant numbers during the mid 1800s as railroads connected nearby cities with agriculture around Fort Worth and other areas across northwestern Texas. By 1907 there were over 5200 people living in Highlandtown and all but two square miles had been claimed by property developers since earliest days of settlement alone! AUSTIN & TEXAS: A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND In 1776 Spanish explorer Antonio de la Nueva discovered new territory including what are today parts of Austin and Dallas counties when he traversed Central Texas for Spaniards under Captains Montoya y Valdez on their way from Mexico City back to Spain through San Antonio de Bexar (present day Houston). On July 16 1776 La Salle's Expedition discovered this new area which included much of what would become Austin County including much of current Highland Park - today’s downtownAustin . DeBexar sent LtCol George Washington Hill with 4 cavalrymen under Captain Alonso Martinez Ruiz Novato August 9 1777 northwestward up Trinity River valley past Tomball towards modern day Northpark while Captn Juan Bautista Xavier Velasquez explored northeastward down Trinity River valley past Dripping Springs towards modern day Georgetown southeastward beyond modern day Slaughterhouse Creek just belowmodern day Kilgore Hills ...... Later that year Partidas encamped on “Pine Point” SW bank Brazos River about 8 miles ESE Round Rock before finally moving due WSW to join Santa Anna River at Clear Fork November 15th 1777 remaining until January 7th 1778 just ESE Round Rock where they constructed Stockade perimeter fence/watchtower observing rivermouth prior to Spanish departure ...........On or about October 24th(date unknown) 2nd Regiment artillery opened fire on Comanche village 10 mi NE Springdale TX targeting some 6 women & 3 children inside wagons parked outside Mission Junipero Serra Chapel watching wagonloads Of corn being unloaded from wagons near mission oktober 25th......
