By 1881, however, most of these farmers had moved away from Meadow Lake to better opportunities in nearby Fort Worth or Arlington. In 1895, George W. Highland purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of what is now Loop 610 Southeast from John Litton for $1 million dollars (). This purchase made Highland one of the largest landowners in Dallas County (). After purchasing this land, he began to build what would become his professional home - The Highlands estate - which still stands today on Park Lane across from Dallas Municipal Airport (). George W. Highlander also developed a large manufacturing center near his estate which employed over 200 people () during its heyday (). However, it was not until after World War II that Highlanders saw significant economic growth within their community(). In 1948-1950 alone when high school graduates formed their own businesses (), there was a net increase of 50% in business activity within Highland! A new hospital was built just south of downtown Dallas (now Dealey Plaza) on State Highway 214 between 1949 and 1951 under contract with The Home Health Service Corporation () for $4 million dollars (). This facility would eventually be renamed Federal Medical Center - Dallas (FMC-D). At this time Highlanders had reached their peak as an economically active community()%. Unfortunately though%, this prosperity quickly turned sour due to gas prices rocketsing upwards throughout the 1970s and 1980s (!). With no real solution to provide affordable housing (), many residents chose instead to move out into surrounding suburbia(). This lack of affordability has done more than anything else to contribute to Highlands' decline over the last few decades (.pdf).
