Highland, Texas is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, located on the banks of the Colorado River. The population was 1,433 at the 2010 census. Highland is one of the oldest towns in Gregg County and has been in existence since 1872. The first settlers in what is now Highland were farmers who arrived from Missouri in 1821. The name "Highland" was given to them by General James Hogg after he found a high mountain range near their location. In 1830, three men named Johnnie McQuiston, Andrew Caldwell and Alexander McKay came across land that would become part of what is now Highlands. They started homesteading and began trading goods with other settlers in neighboring counties. In 1832 they formed a company to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from David Wells near present-day Glen Roseville. The McKay brothers initial gift of this property included four hickory logs for building a cabin and storehouse. This area became known as Old Town because it was the only part of town which wasn't built on high ground like today's streets are built on. In 1849 the Mexican War broke out and many Texans left for Mexico to fight against Maximilian I Gomez de la Huerta y Costilla y Zaldivar who had taken over Mexico City as its president after its independence from Spain two years earlier. A group of Scotsmen decided to stay behind and continue farming although some supplies they brought back with them went bad so they set up shop inland replacing their failing crops with new ones grown on their new land which didn't go bad either! After about six months their equipment gave out so they turned around and returned home having made two successful trips into MexicoCity looking for help but no one wanted anything to do with them because they were considered foreigners! From then until 1862 when Rangers wandered into Highlands again things were pretty much just German settlers living there until Apache raids led by Cochise Indian Chief Jose Maria Pacheco destroyed most of the settlements east of Glen Roseville between 1861-1862 including Highland – an event that forever changed life hereabouts! In 1865 Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant moved downriver towards Austin while Sherman's army devastated Atlanta forcing all southern states southward including Gregg County which seceded from Texas during that time joining Confederate States Of America; however, due to some misunderstandings surrounding military action inside TX not many soldiers actually got involved in this particular battle making it generally considered a neutrality conflict despite taking place within state lines! So much for "the Lost Cause"! This period also ushered in many changes such as school Districts being organized within county lines instead of villages or individual schools forming clusters like today; also churches being established throughout these days as people increasingly needed places where services could be offered without fear or retribution from government officials! When post-war Reconstruction ended following World War II most farmers turned their attention back to agriculture; however, due to increased competition from industry Highland lost its lead position becoming mostly a bedroom community for larger cities until finally falling victim to suburbanization starting around 1960 when highways started opening up opportunities for more jobs outside city limits making commuting easier than ever before! What once was an agricultural center quickly transitioned into something completely different becoming known as "The New Highlands". Meanwhile families continued moving herefrom larger cities seeking escape from crime rates escalating faster than always before leading eventuallyto loss of job opportunity along with shrinkingtown size percentage wise…until recently when things have gradually begun returning back normal albeit slowly
In 1875, the Texas Railroad Commission approved a construction plan for the Highland-Odessa Railway. The company began construction in 1876 and completed its mainline by 1880. The railroad served as a transportation corridor connecting Odessa with downtown Austin and other northern Austin suburbs. In 1923, the Highland-Odessa Railway was merged into the Dallas-Fort Worth Railway.
