Highland, Texas is a small town in southern Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Highland is located on the Llano River, east of Austin and north of Round Rock. The first people to live in what is now Highland were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1698. They named their community San Antonio de Padua after Holy Father Antonio Lrivetto's monastery in that city. In 1835, Scottish-born Major General Zachary Taylor occupied the site of present-day Highland and ordered all Mexican residents be driven out with guns and bayonets. The Mexicans who remained were forced to build a wall around their community which still stands today. This area today includes much of downtown Highlander including Howe Street between Third & Fourth streets; Third Street NE between Ave SE & US-281; Seventh Avenue NE between US 281 & First Street NE; Second Street NW between First & Third streets NW; Broadway SWbetween First & Third Streets SW; and Chambers Bottom Road NW corner with Quarry RoadEast off I-20 near junction with TX HWY 59& FM 1035W Trade Corridor which was originally part as Rancho de las Pulgas Mexican Land Grant which also included parts of present day Midland City limits as well as unincorporated areas eastward along I-20 about 6 miles long extending into Haskell County
