It wasn't until 1865 that General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in San Antonio and began his march through Central Texas bringing with him large quantities of goods needed for military operations such as food supplies and munitions necessary for Sherman's assault on Mexico City that eventually led to American victory over Spain at Buena Vista Creek (1861). During this time much of downtown Hastings west of Fredericksburg Road was destroyed by fire which also left initial evidence leading authorities to believe it may have been arson but no definitive proof could be found until years later when building permits were obtained and an exact investigation revealed there had been no fire sign during those years even though many streets east of Fredericksburg Road were still smoking due to intense heat damage caused by early 20th century oil refineries right next door!
