The town of Laredo was founded on December 12, 1840, when governor Manuel Micheltorena issued a proclamation calling for merchants and colonists to move to this new location because of its strategic location between Houston and Austin on the Brazos River. prior to this time trade between Laredo and Mexico had been sporadic at best due to distance and cultural differences. In 1845 local residents petitioned Congress for Utopia Parish – a land grant that would have given them a parcel of land equal in size to Los Angeles County – but no action was taken until after Texan independence from Spain had been achieved in 1850 In 1865 local residents organized themselves into an agricultural society called Sociedad Anónima Agricultora para Propagaciar La Agroindustria en el Estado de Texas (Anonimously Agricultural Society For propagating Industry In The State Of Texas). This organization later became known as the United Farmers of America (UFA). The first crop grown at what is now Laredo was corn in 1886 On January 7th, 1846 President James Kenedy issued an order compelling all Texans east of the Rio Grande not to fight against Mexico under General Antonio Lopez during the Tejanos' War (1846-48). This order caused many Texans who resided within Hudspeth County or neighbouring counties such as Nueces and Travis Counties to migrate northward into French Terre Province or East Louisiana where war still raged Although most people chose not to fight against their Mexican neighbours some did venture out into battle including Captain Samuel Hogg along with his bandanna wearing riflemen known as “the Quantock Rangers” . Aftermath of hostilities left over 4,000 dead with another 20,-30 thousand refugees living among us permanently forfeiting their propertyrights & citizenship alike; becoming numerous transient freebooters & vagrants roaming our streets night & day without any regulation whatever "It would be difficult enough for menaced passengers on one side or the other [of the border] without also facing danger from those who should ostensibly be protectors," writes historian Edwin Murchison about life within Mexican territory
