Laredo is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,809 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Webb County and home to the largest concentration of Hispanic people in the country. Laredo has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 2,000 years and was founded as an American Indian trading post on December 8, 1836. In 1845, Mexican author Antonio de la Luz y Arellano chose Laredo as his new capital after he defeated Mexico's president Agustín de Iturbide at the Battle of Buena Vista Creek. Laredo served as Mexico's second capital from 1865 until 1870 under President Anastasio Aguirre Madero before becoming its third capital from 1871 until 1938 under President Vicente Fox. The current mayor is Gilberto Garcia. Laredo is located at (32.855439,-95.547959).According to the 2010 census, Laredo had a population of 1,809; this figure does not include Hispanics living in other unincorporated areas or inside border municipalities such as McAllen and Reynosa which are counted separately in Census Bureau counts

It is the second most populous city in Texas after Austin and has been growing rapidly for over twenty years. The Laredo metropolitan area had a population of 2,023,146 as of 2010, making it the ninth largest metro area in Texas and one of its fastest-growing areas. In terms of economic activity, Laredo leads all other cities intx with an economic impact of $11 billion in 2009. The modern history of Laredo began with Spanish settlers who arrived during the 18th century. After several failed attempts to establish permanent settlements near present-day Laredo City, José de Urrea founded San Antonio de Bexar on April 12, 1836 as part of a larger effort to found new Hispanic settlements throughout what are now southern Mexico and central Texas. A year later he sold land that became downtown Laredo to American citizens under Act No. 648 from February 3rd through March 3rd, 1837. At that time much land eastward from the Trinity River was still unsettled by Indian attacks and exploration; this included much today’s east side streets including Main Street (now I-10) and Commerce Street (now US Route 281). On October 30th early 1800s Mexican traders settled at what would become Zavala Street crossing Old State Road 42 South near present day Bowie High School which led some named their settlement “Lobos” or waves due to their original location on high ground accessible only by boat or walking across Buffering Sand river bed

The town was first settled in 1836 by entrepreneurs who had come from Mexico City to find new land to ranch. In 1845, Laredo became an independent municipality and was designated as a seat of government for Hudspeth County. On December 12, 1850, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna arrived at Brownsville with 2,000 men to take possession of the town. He ordered its destruction and set fire to it which destroyed most of the buildings including the courthouse and jail. The community rebirth began immediately as people rebuilt what had been lost. Today Laredo is one of the most important cities in Texas with over 60% growth in population between 2010 and 2015 alone!
The city of Laredo, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Mexica people. The town and its adjacent rancho were named for José Antonio López de Santa Anna, who had been governor of Mexico at the time. In 1837, the Republic of Texas was established and Laredo became a part of it. Mexican troops attacked the town on July 16,1839, and resulted in the death of most of the residents. After this attack,López de Santa Anna ordered his troops to withdraw from Laredo and allow American settlers to develop the area. By 1840, over 100 Americans had settled inLaredo. The first post office was established inLaredo on November 12th, 1841. In 1865, Laredo became an integral part of what is now El Paso County when it was divided from Tarrant County.
