Laredo, Texas is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Laredo has been called "The Gateway to the Prairie", and it has been home to cattle and cotton farming for over 100 years. The area that now makes up Laredo was first inhabited by the Kaskaskia people. The area became part of Mexico after the Mexican–American War. In 1836, Englishman John Cranch established Rancho San Antonio del Tejas in present-day Laredo. A year later, French Canadian Pierre Chouteau founded Rancho Monterey de la Vega in what is now downtown Laredo. Spanish colonists arrived in 1839 and established Mission Santa Anna de los Milagros in what is today downtown Laredo; this mission was destroyed by Apache Indians in 1847. In 1865, General Sam Houston purchased Ranchos Anahuac and Presidio of Edinburg from Juan Rodriguez y Monterrey; these ranchos served as Houston's personal property until his death in 1895. On November 10, 1896 – two days before his death – Houston designated land east of Buffalo Bayou (now known as I-10) as the site of Houston's new capital city: "Houston". This spot along Buffalo Bayou became known as Travis Heights because many early settlers lived on Travis Heights near Buffalo Bayou. In 1907, annexation by Austin created Bastrop County; Laredo residents voted to become a part of Bastrop County on October 6th, 1907. After annexation into Austin proper occurred on December 3rd 1915 through an act of the Austin City Council, most citizens of Bastrop County changed their name to Austinites - including some who had formerly resided within LaredO boundaries
