In the early 1800s, Laredo was home to one of the most significant gunfights in Texas history. On October 5th, 1836, a group of Mexican outlaws led by José Antonio Guerra fought against US troops in what is now known as the Battle of San Jacinto. The battle resulted in a bloodbath that left over 50 Americans dead and over 120 Mexicans dead. One of the participants in this pivotal event was José Maríavirtual Herrera, alias “The Shooter’s Ear Plug” for his famous ear plugs used during the battle. Herrera had been born in Laredo on January 15th, 1786. He became involved with revolutionary activity at an early age and soon rose through the ranks of Mexico’s military establishment. In 1824 he was promoted to colonel and served under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during his successful campaign to overthrow Napoleon Bonaparte from power in Spain. Upon his return toMexico City, Herrera received news of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo and decided it was time for him to take up arms once again. He enlisted into Mexico’s Army under Santa Anna and quickly rose through its ranks. By 1830 he had become captain general and commanding general of all infantry forces within Mexico City proper. On July 6th, 1831 Herrera participated in a major offensive operation against United States forces stationed at Goliad near Austin TX; this action helped lead to Santa Anna being impeached by Congress later that year after disclosures about his involvement with private armies loyal to Emperor Juan Carlos I (ruling Spain). After leading a series of campaigns throughout 1832-1834 against Ulysses S Grant’s army besieging Veracruz city until relieved by Spanish troops earlier that year, Herrera returned home via Coronado Passage on October 9th following months long journey across North America using wagons pulled by donkeys! Returning back home changed everything for Herrera; now he was both wanted fugitive AND head of oneofthe most important families in Mexican politics! As leader ofthe Second Mexican Republic he put pressure on president Domingue Aquino (later President Enrique Peña Nieto) for recognition as legitimate government despite continuing claims from Aguinaldo himself that he should be considered successor due to his absolute leadership skills during the War For Independence (1846-48). As part of efforts to gain recognition from abroad following Mexican independence Guerrero formed an alliance with neighbouring Tabasco province which saw them achieve international support against Aguinaldo culminating in their victory at Buenavista Creek on November 16th 1850 - facto bringing an end finally 4 yearslong war which has claimed more than 20,000 lives including many high ranking Mexican military personnel

The original Laredo town site was laid out by Antonio Lopez on November 17, 1836 as part of the Santa Anna Expedition under Captain James K. Polk. In 1850 John Sweeny erected a sawmill and gristmill at what is now Live Oak Street just east of US Highway 281 north of present day downtown Laredo. This mill became one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees producing woodchips, flour, feed materials and other items until it closed its doors around 1960s due to competition from more efficient mills miles away acrossstate or even abroad.
