In addition to its economic importance, Fort Worth also grew rapidly due to its location nearest Dallas and easy access to transportation via Interstate 10 so that people could move between these two cities without having to leave their homes or businesses. This growth led Fort Worth merchants and officials to build a new courthouse and park adjacent to downtown in 1909 with plans for much larger facilities when they purchased the land from Dodge brothers – founder James Denton Dodge Sr.'s father – for $1 million dollars ($12 million current value). Dodge City quickly emerged as an important commercial center withinDallas/Fort Worth due both to its proximity (only 5 miles away) and because it offered more opportunities for businesses than any other city within those boundaries at that time combined. McKinney was platted by John Mckinney on November 15th 1876 while he served as sheriff of Colline County[2]. He named his new town after General George Custer who died at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument south east of town 3 days earlier while fighting against Indian forces under President Abraham Lincoln[3].
