Mercedes, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 913 at the 2010 census. The area now encompassed by Mercedes was once part of the San Antonio-The Americas Railway and later the Houston and West TX Railroad. There have been many incarnations of Mercedes over its long history: In 1951 local developer Ewing Walton founded Wacoal Incorporated with plans to create an artificial beach community on Buffalo Bayou just south of downtown Waco. The community never came to be as Walton envisioned due to high water levels that year; however development resumed soon thereafter under another developer, Lamar Hunt who purchased land from Walton for what would become Hunt's corporate headquarters complex known as Hunt Tower. With downtown Waco being developed further into the late 1960s and early 1970s by executives associated with Chase National Bank near present day Interstate 35E/US 281), development around Hunts tower stalled until 1981 when then-Mayor Dolph Briscoe ordered construction begun on I-35W/Broadway which finally connected downtown Waco with surrounding neighborhoods including those around Hunt Tower via I-20 approximately east of downtown Waco before terminating at US 281 ten miles north concurrent with current Loop 610A Drive South between Interstate 10 Business Airport southeast of downtown and Loop 610A Drive South outside today's Downtown apartments northwest of US 281 nd southwest along present day FM 620 southwesterly along present day US 287 northeast out beyond today's Sweetwater Creek Wildlife Preserve east of US 281 nd northeast near present day Rice Lake although much smaller than original intentions

In addition to its namesake, Mercedes also includes the towns of Maywood and West Palm Beach. The city was named for German immigrant Friedrich Wilhelm Benz who founded a car company in 1885. The city's first street, Benz Boulevard, was dedicated in 1909.
