Manufacturing includes businesses such as a grain elevator and a tire factory; also located here are two hospitals: one operated by Baylor University Medical Center and one by Central Texas Health System. Taylor has several restaurants including The Sportsman Café which serves western cuisine such as steak tips with gravy or chicken fried steak served with mashed potatoes and green beans, texas barbecue sauce on everything from soft pretzels to macaroni salad, iced tea with lemon or sugar skulls (a favorite refreshment), plus more than 30 brewed beers on tap at various locations around town; however many residents prefer grocery stores within walking distance for most needs including fuel/repair services etc.; there is also a large Walmart just outside town limits

The first settler in Taylor was James Waddell who arrived in 1836 and named it after himself, Taylor County being named for him and his wife (Ann). Waddell had come from Illinois and married Ann during a visit to Texas in 1835 while he was on his way west to claim land grants from President Andrew Jackson. For many years Taylor County functioned as an outpost on the Llano Estacado Trail between Houston and Midland. In 1881, when Benson died leaving two children behind – one age 4 months old[1] and one age 11 months old – his widow hired 100 men under John Lubbock to clear some land for herrgson’s rancho de la Baja which later became Alpine Rancho State Park[2]. This event signaled that decisions about what would become Taylor were no longer made at administrative level but instead through contract negotiations between husband and wife/manager/workers/owners. In 1916 Lewis Fenton moved into this town to take over management of Alpine Rancho State Park after its sale by Mrs. Benson to Congressman James Meeks (D-Austin). In 1925 Jimmie Vaughan purchased 5,000 acres east of Highland Oaks along FM 620 from US$5 per acre ($100) which was then more than any other individual or group ever offered for purchase across all aspects of American agriculture during that period[3]. This offer has been cited as an example of how influential businessman Jimmie Vaughan became within the community due to his connections with both political leaders as well as farmers throughout Travis County[4]. At this time there were only ten homes inTaylor,[5] but by 1930 there were 226 residents living here with over $10 million worth of assets! By 1940 there were 1,598 residents with a total income approaching $20 million! Election results from 1920 through 1928 reflect this shift: Republican Herbert Hoover won with almost 50% of the vote; Democratic Franklin D Roosevelt carried Taylor with nearly 60%, largely because he won most heavily among rural Texans; Independent candidate Floyd McKee polled just 5% statewide while winning three out of four congressional districts within Travis County[]6]. After World War II several new subdivisions developed around Taylorsport such as Alpine Lakeside Village near I-635 southbound on TX 290 Spur (the original access road), White Sands Resort Golf Course northbound off Loop 410A near US 90W (later Bob Dole Airport), Apple Valley Country Club eastbound off I-635 southwest of White Sands Resort Golf Course(), Elmwood Country Club southeast off Loop 610 southeastof Loop 410A()7], Cypress Woods Ranch southwestof Loop 610 northeastof I-635 (), Wimberley Farms northwestof TX 290 northwestof FM 620 (), Strawberry Vineyards southwestoff FM 620 ()8], Timberline School District #1 northbound off TX 290 southeastof FM 620 ()9], Timberline School District #2 eastbound off TX 290 northeastof FM 620 (). These subdivisions are still seen today although their boundaries have changed somewhat
