The city was founded in 1876 by Michael Ladd and J.H. Taylor as a trading post on the Red River between Dallas and Fort Worth. The first settlers were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1876 to proselytize among Native Americans and start a Christian mission settlement called Promontory Pointe Station. Taylor, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houston–Sugar Land metropolitan area. In 1907, J.D. Power and Company organized the first oil well in Taylor County when they drilled the Trinity Well No. 1 on what is now FM 951 (formerly US 281). The railroad that ran through Taylor from east to west played an important role in its history as well as that of other towns in Hudspeth County during the early 1900s. The first train arrived here on October 8, 1892 from Wichita Falls and made its way down FM 951 to Brownsville before entering into Taylor just south of present day Slaughter Road and continuing north to La Porte Springs before terminating at San Angelo Railway Station. In 1902-1903 a new station was built southeast of present day Slaughter Road by the Brown Stockton & Gulf Railroad which served as an interchange for trains coming into and out of Houston; this station was known as "Old Main". After years of service it was taken over by the Houston & Galveston Railroad in 1963 but continued to serve freight traffic until it closed operations in 1978. After years of neglect by both local government entities and private individuals alike, Supervisor Don Hulin spearheaded efforts to renovate infrastructure associated with SH 610 (Houston's major light rail line) between 1997-1998 including repairing tracks along Slaughter Road from Old Main all the way eastward to Loop 610 South near I-10/US 290 junction - giving residents access not only to jobs within walking distance but also Expo '97 Speedway nearby! This project more than paid off as today's Taylor Trails Park can be reached without ever leaving town limits!
