Gun targets have been a part of Bountiful, Utah's history for many years. The first target pistol was built in 1851 by George W. Richards and itfired a ball that weighed only 1/4 pound. In 1861, the Spencer Rifle Company began manufacturing target pistols in Bountiful and soon became one of the leading gun companies in the city. The company produced over 100 pistols between 1861 and 1865. Many of these guns were used to shoot at Confederate General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. In 1903, John Hogue started manufacturing rifle targets on his farmstead east of town. This business quickly became successful and Hogue eventually sold his Target Manufacturing Company to James Waddell in 1913. From 1913-1917, Waddell manufactured target rifles for Union General Joseph Hooker during the American Civil War. These guns were used to shoot at Confederate General Robert E. Lee while he was stationed in northern Virginia
