Bountiful, Utah is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. The population was 26,567 at the 2010 census. The current mayor is Jackie Biskupski. The city was named after bountiful land grants made by President Brigham Young to encourage settlement in the area. The first settler in what is now Bountiful was James Morrison who arrived on October 6, 1845. He and his family were the first white people to live in what later became Bountiful. A post office called "Bountiful" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. In 1862, Mormon pioneers John Dickson and George Hinkle founded the town of Centerville east of present day Bountiful on large holdings granted them by President Brigham Young. Centerville prospered for several years but then quickly declined due to lack of water supplies and other problems encountered during pioneer travel westward overland through Utah Territory towards California. In 1868, David Waddell founded the town of West Valley which soon became one of the largest towns within what would become Salt Lake County when it was organized on January 12th, 1870 As early as 1901 there were reports that more settlers were moving into what would become Bountiful from nearby Saint George than any other location within Salt Lake County; this led to renamed “Salt Lake City” its official name less than a year later on December 15th 1902 when new boundaries were created following a distributional map drawn up by Commissioner Albert Jahnke that showed how much land lay beyond those located around downtown Salt Lake City including parts of Provo (later Draper), Logan (later Ogden), Lehi (later Stroudsburg) and Sandy (now South Jordan). Bountiful began receiving visitors from all over America beginning with wagon trains traveling down Spanish Fork Road near present day Cottonwood Heights as late as 1865 when colorful LDS preacher Lorenzo Snow stopped at Big Hole Springs while preaching circuit directions from Cedar Mesa southwards across the Wasatch Mountains before continuing his journey northward via Box Elder Road to Springdale Wells where he spent two nights before continuing his journey southward along Beaver Creek Road and eventually arriving at Mount Carmel Cemetery northwest of present day Midvale just east of today's University Commons neighborhood Prior to 1850 polygamy had been illegal so many women could not have children and so fertile local farmland simply dried up leaving residents struggling economically even though Mormons controlled most aspects of life outside their religious enclave . Many among these early settlers formed what became known as "the First Families" who gradually acquired acreage adjoining their homes becoming owners or possessors thereof perpetuating their claim against claims for past properties currently lying fallow or unclaimed . These pioneering families are considered architecturally significant for designing wide open rural living spaces characterized by well-planned roads leading directly to their homes without going through neighboring settlements which at times resulted in close quarters combat between adjacent families vying for control over available resources . This type of open countryside living setting continues throughout American history with few changes save occasional zoning revisions designed solely fowardlier economic interests rather than an appreciation or understandingof prior design patterns
