Bountiful, Utah is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. The name Bountiful comes from the Oglala Sioux word "bóhonti", meaning "land of plenty." The first settler in what is now Bountiful was John A. Campbell who arrived in 1847. He named his land Afternoon Star because he saw a star at noon on July 24th of that year while driving over the sagebrush flats near present day Cottonwood Heights. In 1851 Brigham Young call for settlers to come to Zion Valley and this group traveled east across the Great Salt Lake in wagons under the guidance of Captain Fetterman and others until they reached Springdale in January 1852 where they erected a log cabin known as Springdale House. They left for Rocky Mountain Temple which was located about 8 miles (12 km) north of their current home on Ute Fork Farm Road today’s Glen Canyon Boulevard just before winter set in January 1853. In 1857 Isaac Capps came over from Illinois with his family and began farming around present-day Cottonwood Heights on what is now called Campbell Ranchos de las Animas River Rd which he named after himself and his father Isaac Capps Sr.. At one time there were over 100 families living here including 20 pioneer women who raised chickens, hogs, cows and potatoes by hand Hidetaka Miyamoto said “It would take more than two weeks to plow up an acre [of] ground with these oldfashioned machines” but it wasn’t until 1862 when Cyrus Hastings came along with his team and plows that agriculture got a real start here. By 1865 there were 165 white people living here including 40 Mormon pioneers working on ranching properties under Captains Waddell & Hitchcock as well as some 25 Native American Tribes operating Hitchcock & Company fur traders outpost early Saturday morning Apr 1st 1865 when Brigham Young announced via telegraph that Moroni had sent him $3,000 to purchase goods necessary for planting crops etc….. continued growth followed with 5 stores opened by 1870; 2 banks; 4 churches – all affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints; oil Rig being built at nearby Anaconda Mines beginning production Mar 1896 utilizing water power source later grid connected…. In 1880 George Davenport arrived from Illinois and took up homesteading near present day Cottonwood Heights along Witham Creek making him one of the earliest developers of this town according to historian Don Ewing . For many years it was considered one of the most beautiful places on Earth due its fertile soil, rolling hillsides covered by ponderosa pine trees dating back to 1850 when Joseph Smith discovered rich coal seams west of Hereford Hills deep within Bountiful Canyon…Priorities shifted during World War II when bombing raids destroyed most commercial buildings leaving few reminders visible save homespun aprons still used today by local farmers working fields irrigated through drip irrigation systems…Afterward many businesses reopened such as: First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Pizza Hut (now Masterpiece Pizza), KFC (now Kentucky Fried Chicken), Safeway (now Walmart).
